For 38 years, Inter*Im/ICDA has been working to help revitalize the International District community in Seattle. Inter*Im originally was established as the International District Improvement Association, by the International District business community in 1969, in response to the need to address the problems of the Chinatown/International District community. At the time, the I-5 freeway had just been completed, displacing single family homes; the Ozark fire code, which called for stricter fire codes in downtown hotels, was forcing many ID hotels to close, and driving residents out. Streets were dimly lit and there were ongoing problems with crime. Inter*Im was established to turn these conditions around by bringing the community together to identify and address unmet needs in the community. In 1979, Inter*Im established InterIm Community Development Association , a 501(c) (3), non-profit community development corporation, to continue working to promote the revitalization of the International District community for the benefit of its low income and minority residents, and small businesses. Inter*Im has worked to promote revitalization, but without gentrification and displacement, and has been actively involved in issues affecting the broader Asian/Pacific community. The organizations are in the process of merging as one organization to continue the work of revitalizing the International District. The purpose of Inter*Im (Community Development Association) is to directly facilitate community development objectives in the International District and the larger Pacific Asian Islander community through the following activities:
Inter*Im's approach to community development has been to work with the entire community to encourage community-based revitalization by those who have a commitment to the District and beyond. To learn more about the history of the ID, to go:
