InterIm CDA and the International District Housing Alliance Will Merge
InterIm Community Development Association (InterIm CDA) merges with the International District Housing Alliance (IDHA) on January 2, 2012. The merged agency’s name will be InterIm CDA.
Why have the two decided to merge?
Community needs and priorities have changed over the past 40-plus years since InterIm CDA first started. Models of community development and capacity-building, established in the 1970’s and 1980’s, are ready for change to reflect where the community has changed, demographically and geographically. Additionally, in the past several years, safety nets have been decimated as government funding for housing-related and other human services has been drastically reduced. During this same time, the trend in philanthropy has been to redirect giving toward larger, and more established, charities instead of building capacity in smaller organizations.
In other words, while the needs have changed and increased, the funding to help has declined.
By merging, InterIm CDA and IDHA plan to leverage resources, maintain service to the same populations, and invest scarce resources strategically in building the infrastructure needed to develop new sources of contributed support. In time, we hope to expand our programming and explore where we can collaborate with others in going to greater scale to meet the growing needs of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) and immigrant and refugee populations.
While developing low- and moderate-income affordable housing has been a mainstay of InterIm CDA’s work, the combined organization will creatively improve its community development model. We will be innovative by better integrating physical housing with greater community outreach and more direct housing services for the people who live in the homes we build. Together, we will build a new way of better aligning the comprehensive housing and community development needs of not only API, but also a diverse array of immigrant and refugee groups.
As a merged organization, what is our impact?
• Each year, over 730 individuals have a safe, healthy home because of our housing projects.
• This year, IDHA’s housing case management staff conduct 6,000 visits with 1,350 clients who face eviction, a financial or personal crisis, or a job loss to find housing options that will keep them stable.
• This year, IDHA’s Solace Program, an innovative transitional housing program, works with 26 families, most of them immigrant and refugee, to escape from homelessness and despair into the bright light of housing stability and hope.
• Each year, nearly 140 low-income individuals directly benefit from the Danny Woo Community Garden, including 70 elderly gardeners (whose average age is 76 years young) and 70 children and youth who live in the neighborhood and who participate in the summer programming at the Danny Woo Children’s Garden. About 350 volunteers help maintain the garden, and hundreds more visitors benefit from this unique, community-run green space in the heart of downtown Seattle.
• And each year, over 750 small businesses in the Chinatown/ID and Pioneer Square area benefit from the affordable parking spaces we manage, to help promote a healthy and vibrant business district.
Cultural competency is important for InterIm CDA not only in terms of service delivery, but in organizational values. One reflection of this is the fact that the vast majority of our Board and staff are of and from the API community. Finally, InterIm CDA owns most of the housing complexes it has developed over the years, and as a nonprofit, is able to leverage federal, state, and local dollars to build them, thereby funneling millions of dollars in investment back into the community.
