Imagine expanded sidewalks—lined with trees and plants, sitting benches, and public art—that invite people to walk their neighborhoods and stop by the local “mom and pop” shops. Imagine a self-sustaining hydrology system that captures rain water from a nearby building to water the newly planted trees and greenery along the sidewalk.
This is an image of a successful green street, and in 2009 InterIm CDA completes construction of the Chinatown/International District’s first green street.
The Maynard Green Street demonstration project is part of our commitment and vision for a more pedestrian-friendly and sustainable neighborhood. Projects like this one not only serve to enhance the quality of life for residents, but also create a better environment for small businesses.
